The Scottish Genealogy Society
Family History Index Index by surname The Family History Index is an index of over 2,500 separate files deposited by researchers with the Society over a period of almost 50 years. Each file contains research on a specific family or number of families and there may be a number of files for a given family. The files range in size from one page to substantial family histories running to tens or even hundreds of pages. They may take the form of research notes, random jottings, family group sheets, pedigree charts, family trees, original documents, transcripts, newspaper cuttings, photographs or fully written up histories. If you are unable to visit the library yourself then it might be an idea to approach one of the professional reseachers who are members of the Society listed on our Links page. They should be able to tell quite quickly if the information is likely to be relevant to your researches and since they usually visit the Library regularly, they may not need to make a separate visit on your behalf. The counties mentioned are those which are predominantly mentioned in the work. The dates are approximate, but give an idea of the period covered by the work. Generally families of three generations or more are included. The standard county three letter codes have been used with the inclusion of 'D&G' for Dumfries and Galloway. ELG = Elgin; ALL = Worldwide; NI = Northern Ireland; SCOT = various locations in Scotland; UK = various places within the UK.
Where there is no figure for the number of pages, this generally means that there are a significant number of pages (more than a few). |
